A Personal Journey into Cricket

Walsall Women's Cricket Squad

Living across the road from the Cricket Club for over 20 years has been a delightful experience. I often socialised and watched premier league matches in the clubhouse. I've always called the club my happy place!

While my knowledge of cricket is limited, I find myself asking about how the scoring works each year—I'm quite clueless! However, I do enjoy watching most sports. Spending a sunny match day at the club in Walsall with a refreshing pint of lager is simply unbeatable.

Facing Life's Challenges

At a social event at the close of the 2024 season, a member of the ladies' team invited me to join their Monday evening training sessions next season. I decided to give it a try, not knowing how much my life was about to change. By the end of that year, my husband received a diagnosis of stage 4 bowel cancer. Our lives swiftly shifted to revolve around surgeries, medical appointments, treatments, and difficult conversations that no one wishes to have.

During this time, I lost my interest in fitness and found socialising challenging. Thankfully, I had many friends at the club who became my emotional support network without even realising it.

The Turning Point

As April approached, I reluctantly agreed to attend training. I knew I could run and catch (sometimes), and I had some experience from over 30 years ago in team sports like hockey, rounders, and football. While I wasn't exceptional at any of these sports, engaging in something new and taking my mind off cancer for a few hours each week turned out to be the remedy I didn't realise I needed.

I became a regular and enjoyed being part of such a supportive group of girls. Now, I cannot imagine life without cricket and the wonderful ladies who have become great friends.

Embracing Cricket

As I mentioned, I love most sports, but I'm not outstanding at any, cricket included. However, I am progressing and have even been selected to play for the team, which is amazing! It gives me such a buzz when we compete. This year, I'm looking forward to giving hardball a try and getting more involved in playing.

Join Us for Training

Starting in April, we come together for training on Monday nights. No kit is required—just some sensible clothing and footwear to run about in. We welcome anyone over 13 years old, regardless of ability or experience. It's all about having fun and being supportive! You don't have to be a member to join our taster sessions, although we would love for you to become part of our club.

Our taster sessions are happening on the 13th, 20th, and 27th of April from 6 PM to 8:30 PM.
