OUR HERITAGE

Cricket in Walsall since 1812.

Walsall Cricket Club is one of the oldest cricket clubs in the country. On 18 November 1872, the Walsall Observer reported a dinner at The Dragon Hotel to celebrate the club's sixtieth anniversary, which dates our founding to 1812.

Today our aim is to be the central community hub in Walsall, fostering sportsmanship and skill development in cricket and bowls for all ages, while providing a vibrant social space and event venue for the wider community.

From the Chuckery to Gorway Road

Our first recorded match was on 30 August 1833, when Walsall hosted Bilston at the Chuckery and won by an innings and 20 runs. The club played at the Chuckery until 1908, and the Gorway Road ground opened in April 1909.

The old pavilion was wheeled down to the new ground, which took all day, and today's pavilion has grown around that original frame. Three books chart the club's history from 1812 to 2012.

International players who played for Walsall

  • Dilip Doshi: India, 1979 to 1983

  • Mushtaq Mohammed: Pakistan, 59 Tests (1959 to 1979), captain in 19

  • Graham Yallop: Australia, 1976 to 1984, captain in the late 1970s

  • Alfred Valentine: West Indies, 1950s and 60s

Come and see the team photographs, bats and Honours Board in the clubhouse. They include our national U15 cup, won three years running in the 1980s, and the national club championship in 1996.
