About the Heritage of our club.
It was reported in the Walsall Observer that on the 18th November 1872, a dinner was held at The Dragon Hotel in Walsall, to celebrate the Sixtieth Anniversary of Walsall Cricket Club. The Club therefore had been founded in 1812. This makes the club one of the oldest clubs in the country.
The first cricket match for which records were recorded was on 30th August 1833, when Walsall entertained Bilston at the Chuckery. Walsall won by an innings and 20 runs. In the early days, the Club's ground was at the Chuckery, Walsall until 1908. The new ground at Gorway Road was opened in April 1909, and the old Pavilion was wheeled down to the new ground taking all day. The current pavilion structure has developed around the original pavilion frame.
In total 3 books chart the history of the club from 1812 to 2012. We are proud to confirm that several international players have played for our Club over the years.
These include:
-
Dilip Doshi who played for India from 1979 to 1983.
-
Mushtaq Mohammed who played for Pakistan in 59 test matches (1959 - 79), captaining them in 19 matches.
-
Graham Yallop who played for Australia from 1976 to 1984, and was their team Captain in the late 1970's.
-
Alfred Valentine who played for West Indies in 1950 and 60's
We recommend that you take time to look at the team photographs, cricket bats, and the Honours Board that are on display in the Clubhouse, to see the names of cricketers that have played for Walsall Cricket Club, and the success the club has had including winning the national U15 cup 3 years in a row in the 1980's, and the national club championship in 1996.
